Chapter 359

To claim Olivia felt no disappointment or resentment would be dishonest. Yet, despite everything, she couldn't deny the profound bond they had shared since childhood.

In her heart, Liam had always been her most cherished old friend. No matter what had transpired between them, she wanted him to live well.

The news of his death sent her mind spiraling into chaos.

After a long silence, Olivia finally spoke, her voice rough with emotion. "Continue."

Mr. Hart opened his eyes and studied her before going on. "I met him in the stock market. Since I was young, people avoided me because of my appearance. I had wealth, but he had nothing except brilliance. We understood each other instantly and took over the market together. With his help, we expanded our reach and founded multiple companies."

"There were too many businesses for me to handle alone, so he took charge. He worked relentlessly, like a machine that never needed rest."

"I considered him my brother. I even tried introducing him to women, but he refused. He never wanted to return to his homeland. The only person constantly by his side was Sebastian."

"Later, someone tried to kill me, and he gave his life to save mine. Before he died, he confessed there was one person he could never forget. So, after his death, I vowed to find you."

Olivia's lips parted, but no sound escaped. She lifted a hand to her face, her fingers brushing against the cold trails of her tears.

Her first reaction was disbelief. "That can't be true. Wasn't Evelyn the most important person to him?" she blurted.

Mr. Hart tilted his head, confusion flickering across his face. "Evelyn? I don't know who that is. But it doesn't matter. I'm a selfish man. Saving your life repays my debt to him. Remember our agreement. From now on, your fate is no concern of mine."

Olivia wanted to demand if he felt even a shred of guilt. But as the thought settled, she realized Liam's choices had been his own. She had no right to blame anyone else.

Her voice trembled as she replied, "I understand. Thank you for saving me, Mr. Hart."

With a dismissive wave, he signaled for her to leave.

As she reached the door, a sudden thought struck her. She paused and glanced back. "Liam never returned home because he was wronged and cast out. If you truly valued his kindness, you wouldn't let the current Winslow family live in comfort."

Mr. Hart's lips twisted into a mocking smile.

"Do you take me for a fool? After what happened to you, Oliver already investigated. The Winslows may be behind your recent troubles."

"I know there's bad blood between you. You're just trying to use me to settle your score, aren't you? I've repaid my debt by saving your life. Don't expect me to interfere on your behalf."

His condescending tone left Olivia seething. She had never intended to manipulate him.
