Chapter 224
"I never would have imagined you had such similar interests with her," Liam commented.
Donovan's curiosity was instantly aroused. "Is that so? What an interesting coincidence. I'd very much like to meet her."
Liam remained silent, a fleeting shadow of weariness and bitterness passing across his features.
Donovan gestured toward the antique bookshelf. "Though I was raised in Westhaven, my soul belongs to Eldermere. My entire family - grandfather, parents, and aunt - made certain I never forgot my roots. These ancient texts found me when I had little connection to my homeland. At first, they were incomprehensible, written in a script I'd never studied. But I taught myself, page by page. It's become more than just reading - I've developed a passion for collecting antiquities. I suppose your friend shares this interest?"
A faint smile touched Liam's lips. "You've guessed correctly." Olivia didn't merely appreciate antiques - she possessed a rare talent for restoring them. But Liam kept this detail to himself.
Donovan smoothly redirected the conversation. "You didn't come here today just to discuss my hobbies, did you?"
Liam's expression grew solemn. For the first time, the proud businessman lowered his head before another man. "I need your help finding someone. While she may no longer hold importance in my life, I must ensure her safety."
Liam had chosen Donovan precisely because of his limited connections in Eldermere and his simple lifestyle in Westhaven.
Yet Liam withheld the complete truth. With Olivia's current situation unknown, revealing too much could endanger her further.
Donovan adjusted his position, his lips curving into a polite smile while his eyes remained distant.
"I'm uncertain what's occurred," Donovan said, "but for you to seek my help - a mere business associate - speaks volumes. While I sympathize, my departure is imminent. My grandfather's condition demands my attention. And you met my cousin today? She battles a congenital heart condition."
Liam understood Donovan wasn't outright refusing. The deliberate use of "business associate" wasn't lost on him.
Without hesitation, Liam responded, "I'm aware you're expanding your operations back home. I'm prepared to offer Blackwood Enterprises' long-term partnership with your company in Eldermere."
Donovan's eyebrows lifted in surprise. "Are you certain she means so little to you?" His tone carried clear skepticism.
Donovan's modest business couldn't normally attract partnership with the mighty Blackwood empire.
He preferred organic growth over leveraging connections. Yet here stood Liam, offering an unexpected opportunity that Donovan couldn't ignore.
Pain flickered in Liam's steady gaze. "Truthfully, she's my wife. Our relationship has... deteriorated. Now she's missing. I lack the time to search personally, but I must know she's safe. If you find her, simply confirm her wellbeing. No need to return her to me."
Donovan stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Your wife? But aren't you engaged to the Hartley heiress?"
His thorough investigation of the Hartleys and Evelyn, prompted by Alistair, had revealed Liam's connection.
Liam gave a slight nod but offered no further explanation.
Donovan's opinion of Liam's character plummeted. His gaze carried undisguised contempt.
Yet he couldn't deny Liam's formidable business acumen.
Though the Blackwoods paled beside the Kensingtons, Donovan never underestimated Liam.
Having witnessed his parents' enduring love, Donovan held marriage sacred.
He despised those who abandoned their vows, though he recognized these as personal failings.
Business was business. Should he encounter Liam's unfortunate wife, he'd encourage her to leave this marriage behind.
"I'll do my best. Send her details to my assistant. But Mr. Blackwood, I must be clear - tracking isn't my expertise. Success isn't guaranteed."
Liam stood. "Understood. Whatever the outcome, I'll honor our agreement regardless."
Donovan quipped, "Shouldn't we treat today's arrangement separately from our usual dealings?"
He referred to the partnership between Blackwood Enterprises and his smaller company.
Donovan felt no gratitude - this deal might actually cost Liam financially.
With stark honesty, Liam replied, "Consider this my gratitude. I expect nothing in return."
Accepting this, Donovan signaled his staff to escort Liam out.
Watching Liam depart, Donovan pondered the man's contradictions.
How could someone so polished treat his wife so callously?
Meanwhile, Seraphina arrived at Donovan's estate. After instructing her team to monitor Olivia, she went to meet her cousin.
Fate intervened as she crossed paths with the departing Liam.
Their hospital encounter had left Seraphina convinced Liam sought Donovan's favor.
With deliberate grace, she tilted her chin up as she passed, exuding aristocratic poise.
Dressed impeccably, radiating confidence, she expected Liam's attention.
Yet just like before, Liam walked past as if she were invisible.
Unaccustomed to such disregard, Seraphina paused, shooting Liam a perplexed glance before impulsively following.
"Hello." She intercepted him, extending a perfectly manicured hand. "Visiting Donovan?"
Liam briefly shook her hand. "Yes, just concluded my business with Mr. Kensington. Good day."
With a polite nod, he moved to leave.
A frown marred Seraphina's usually composed features. How dare he ignore her?
Determined to capture his attention, she hurried after him. "As a Reeves, you deserve Donovan's respect despite his arrogance. We've only met twice, but you've made an impression. Perhaps I could assist you?"
