Chapter 282

Alistair's voice carried a depth of emotion that resonated through the room as he spoke to Olivia. "My dear, please don't see this as an inconvenience. It's only proper that we celebrate your return to the family. I wish to formally recognize you as my granddaughter before all of society." His aged hands trembled slightly with earnestness. "With me by your side, no one will ever dare mistreat you again."

Olivia found herself trapped in the sincerity of Alistair's gaze, unable to immediately refuse his heartfelt request.

Donovan, noticing her hesitation, stepped closer and murmured in a voice meant only for her, "Grandfather has planned this meticulously. Perhaps we should honor his wishes with a small celebration." His fingers brushed lightly against hers in reassurance. "And if you decline, Julian will only persist. Trust me to handle everything - I gave you my word of protection, and I intend to keep it."

Olivia turned to study Donovan's face, her expression a mixture of gratitude and concern. She knew better than anyone the weight he carried daily.

Alistair often spoke of how Donovan shouldered the Kensington family's burdens alone. Now he was managing Alistair's medical care while sacrificing his own rest, yet still offering to arrange this celebration for her sake.

The thought of adding to Donovan's already overwhelming responsibilities pained Olivia. But seeing the unshakable determination in his dark eyes, she felt an unexpected sense of security, though a quiet sigh still escaped her lips.

Their conversation gradually shifted to lighter topics as they spent the afternoon with Alistair, discussing plans for Olivia's upcoming welcome banquet.

Throughout their discussion, Alistair repeatedly emphasized the importance of ensuring Olivia felt cherished and supported within the family.

Their visit lasted until the physician arrived, politely reminding Alistair it was time for his medication and rest.

As they departed the room together, Donovan and Olivia walked in comfortable silence, with Julian trailing several steps behind.

Donovan leaned slightly toward Olivia, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Be cautious around Julian. He's far more complicated than he appears, and not someone to take lightly."

Olivia responded with graceful hand movements, her sign language fluid and expressive. "I understand. You're the only one here I truly trust."

Donovan, who had painstakingly learned sign language for their private conversations, felt a surge of warmth at her words.

A rare, genuine smile softened Donovan's typically stern features - a stark contrast to his usual restrained expressions.

Julian chose that moment to catch up, his sharp eyes missing nothing. "How unusual to see Donovan so at ease. Olivia, you should know he's normally quite severe with me and Vivienne. It seems you've charmed even our stoic cousin."

The warmth in Olivia's eyes vanished instantly at Julian's words.

When Donovan turned to face his cousin, his expression had hardened into one of unmistakable impatience.

Without acknowledging Julian's comment, Donovan turned back to Olivia. "I have matters to attend to here. You should return and rest. We'll discuss the details tomorrow." Olivia nodded in understanding.

As Donovan strode away, Olivia offered Julian a polite but distant smile before turning to leave.
